June is almost over, which means it’s just about time for Julaiku! What the heck is Julaiku? you might be wondering. You can read a more detailed explanation here, but essentially it’s when I and whoever cares to join me in the fun write a haiku each and every day of July.*
I started doing this in 2014, and after a hiatus in 2015, I’ve done it every year since, which makes this year the fifth year. Last year, participation (at least as far as I’m aware) doubled! Before you get too impressed, I should clarify doubling meant that two people participated (thanks, Michelle!). If participation doubles each year, in just a couple of decades, Julaiku will be a veritable cultural phenomenon! And you can get in on the ground floor. You can one day say, “Oh, yeah, I was doing that before it got so trendy.” You know you want to!
As a special challenge to myself and whoever else is up for it, I’m starting a new tradition: Three-Word Thursdays! Ready your lists of five- and seven-syllable words and prepare to write some three-word poems.
*In truth, I’ll be writing two every day because I have a separate ongoing haiku project for the year.
