Waking

Elizabeth Barton

her leaden eyes open slowly
as she emerges
from vaguely angry dreams
with a tense and qualmish feeling
she knows
she will not shake until midday

while the warmth
of her most recent lover
still lingers in the bedclothes,
she is already beginning
to forget his name
